Job Vacancy: Communications Strategist
Location: remote work, anywhere in the world.
Type of Contract: 6-months contract, with possibility of renewal for 2021.

Overview of Kohl and IKP:
Kohl: a Journal for Body and Gender Research is a queer, radical publication from the South. Based in Beirut and existing outside of institutions, it is an archive that maps our political lives as theory. Through Kohl, we aim to question what and whose knowledges/sexualities are legitimate, challenge the means of production, and historicize (some of) our struggles in their multiplicity. Intersectional Knowledge Publishers is the mechanism through which Kohl operates. IKP aspires to create the queer, decolonial, anti-capitalist spaces we have been longing for.
Overview of the position:
The Communications Strategist is a full-time position and plays a key role in the content creation, management, and distribution of Kohl and IKP’s publications and events.
In addition to conveying Kohl and IKP’s politics through communication and outreach strategies, the Communications Strategist is responsible for expanding our reach and exposure, increasing our network of collaborators, building community relations, and diversifying our content in forms and platforms. As the first point of contact for our audiences and communities, the Communications Strategist will deploy communications as a political tool and language. They will develop a comprehensive strategy to build transnational and local alliances, as well as engage with political shifts and events in SWANA and transnationally.
The Community and Communications Manager reports to the Editor in Chief.
- Create and execute a comprehensive digital and offline media strategy for Kohl and IKP
- Direct and manage long-term communications so they align with Kohl’s political vision
- Curate relevant, original, high-quality content geared towards establishing the organization’s presence and broadening its audience
- Manage all communication content, such as mailing list, newsletters, social media posts and messages, posters, flyers, etc.
- Respond to and engage with local, regional, and transnational events and news when relevant and necessary
- Archive by transforming our work and events into written or audiovisual material
- Build relationships with groups, publications, and accomplices whose work aligns with Kohl’s transnationally, both online and offline
- Contribute to anchoring Kohl and IKP’s work in community and movement building, and queer feminist organizing
- Actively suggest events and publication content in relation to current political engagements and alliances
- Design new projects and suggestions to diversify content in parallel with publications (podcasts, videos, campaigns, etc.)
- Take responsibility for the organization’s digital security
- Liaise with web developers, designers, and technical assistants to deliver high quality content
- Respond to media’s requests and inquiries, and create media campaigns by coordinating interviews and meetings
Website and social media management
- Envision social media strategy and identity, and implement it fully
- Design social media content calendars and posts
- Manage, monitor, and report on all social media platforms and their audience
- Maintain, update, and upload new content to Kohl and IKP’s websites
- Build online relationships with key social media users, bloggers, and allies
- Actively communicate events or important transnational news to the team, and strategize around the team’s engagement
- Organize all internal communication processes such as meetings, minutes, and agendas, and archive them
- Manage communication techniques and systems to organize the work cycle (e.g. Slack, Workast)
- Organize events, workshops, and campaigns, including logistics, technical management, and assignation of tasks
- Participate actively in all team processes, including weekly meetings, drafting of calls and reports, and the shaping of Kohl’s political vision
- Communicate and coordinate with the director and the team Assist the team with grants, especially those related to the communications office
Competencies and skills
- Strong commitment to queer feminism, radical justice, and anti-capitalism
- Knowledge of SWANA political landscape in relation to queer feminisms, decolonial politics, and anti-capitalist organizing
- Part of feminist communities and movements in SWANA or transnationally, and ability to engage with movement building
- Ability to envision and implement a coherent political strategy
- Ability to take initiative and work independently with little supervision
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Attention to detail
- Strong organizational skills, offline and online
- Excellent knowledge of traditional and digital media and how to engage with them
- Ability to work in a team and with audiences
Two to three years of relevant experience in communications.
Two to three years of experience in transnational or SWANA-focused feminist organizing.
Arabic and English.
- Graphic design literacy
- Knowledge of image and video editing software
- Strong online media presence
- Knowledge of French and/or Spanish
