Overview of Kohl and IKP:

Kohl: a Journal for Body and Gender Research is a progressive journal on gender and sexuality in the Middle East, South West Asia, and North Africa regions. It is the main publication of Intersectional Knowledge Publishers. Kohl and IKP are feminist platforms that work towards the indivisibility of justice through discourse-making and queer liberation outside the state and the capitalist system. We focus on feminist knowledge in the MENA and transnationally through publishing, translation, conferences, workshops, as well as community and movement building.

Overview of the position:

The Arabic Editor and Translation Manager is a full-time position and plays a key role in the editorial team of the journal. In addition to actively participating in the decision-making process, the Arabic Editor and Translation Manager is responsible for managing Kohl and IKP’s translation work and political direction, handling Arabic editing, leading on IKP’s Conceptual Maps of Translation project, and ensuring the smooth running of the internal organization with the Editor in Chief.

 

Key Responsibilities:

Kohl:

  • Creates, leads, and manages the translation team
  • Provides feedback to the translation team
  • Coordinates the translation timeline
  • Oversees Arabic publications, including language editing, proofreading, standardization, fact-checking, and research prior to publication
  • Co-participates in the forward vision and politics of the journal
  • Co-participates in the content drafting, editing, and translation of all announcements related to the journal
  • Co-participates in the pre-selection and final selection of manuscripts

Conceptual Maps of Translation:

  • Creates and maintains a database
  • Conducts relevant research
  • Organizes workshops on translation practices
  • Coordinates a team of translators and practitioners
  • Designs the practitioner’s manual
  • Enforces a timeline for the project

The Arabic Editor and Translation Manager is also expected to play a key managerial role in IKP by pushing its vision forward, committing to its politics, and investing in its futurity.

 

 Qualifications:

  • Competencies and skills:
  • Strong translation and editing skills in Arabic
  • Ability to evaluate research and recommend edits
  • Good managerial skills and ability to lead and work in a team
  • Good organizational skills and ability to relay information accurately in a timely manner
  • Clear, open, and transparent communication
  • Solid background in gender and sexuality
  • Strong commitment to and vision for gender justice, sexual and bodily rights, and feminism
  • Knowledge of the MENA region’s queer and feminist movements
  • Knowledge of the current state of feminist research in the MENA region
  • Ability to evaluate research and recommend edits
  • Sharp attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently, remotely, and/or under pressure
  • Flexibility and adaptability to change
  •  

Education: 

University degree in the social sciences or humanities, or equivalent experience.

 

Experience: 

Minimum of 5 years of editing, translation, or relevant experience in the MENA region.

 

Required Languages: 

Arabic and English. Knowledge of French is a plus.
